General safety warnings
Burn within sight. Never leave a burning candle unattended. Make sure the flame is completely extinguished before leaving a room or going to sleep.
Keep away from flammable items. Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire, such as curtains, bedding, books, or clothing. Maintain at least 12 inches of space between a candle and any combustible items.
Keep out of reach of children and pets. Place lit candles on a stable, sturdy surface where they cannot be knocked over. Store unlit candles and matches securely out of their reach.
Use a heat-resistant surface. Place your candle on a stable, fireproof, heat-resistant surface to prevent heat damage to your furniture.
Avoid drafts. Place candles away from open windows, fans, air vents, or other drafts to prevent rapid, uneven burning, sooting, or flare-ups.
Before you light your candle
Trim the wick. Before each use, trim the wick to 1/4 inch. A long or crooked wick can cause uneven burning, dripping, or a flame that is too high and smokes.
Initial burn. The first time you light your candle, let it burn long enough for the wax pool to melt completely across the top of the container. This prevents "tunneling," which makes the wick difficult to light and limits the candle's fragrance and life.
While the candle is burning
Limit burn time. Do not burn your candle for more than 3 to 4 hours at a time. This prevents the container from overheating.
Keep wax pool clear. Keep the melted wax pool free of any wick trimmings, matches, or other debris.
Do not move. Never touch or move a candle while it is burning or while the wax is still liquid. The container will be hot.
Monitor the flame. If the flame becomes too high, flickers repeatedly, or smokes, extinguish the candle. Let it cool, trim the wick, and check for drafts before relighting.
When you extinguish your candle
Use a snuffer. It is safer to use a candle snuffer to extinguish the flame than to blow it out, which can cause hot wax to splatter.
Never use water. Do not use water to put out a candle, as it can cause the hot wax to splatter and may cause a glass container to break.
Let it cool. Allow the candle to cool completely before trimming the wick, moving it, or relighting it.
Know when to stop. Discontinue use when only 1/4 to 1/2 inch of wax remains at the bottom of the container. Burning past this point can cause the container to overheat.
